Joseph D. Martin

(Board Member since 1988; re-election year is 2027)
Objective
To use my knowledge and experience in representing you, our MVEA member-owners. Our industry is changing rapidly, and I believe that my background and experience well qualifies me to support MVEA through these challenges.
Background
I am currently retired. The former owner-operator of the Limon and Sterling Colorado Comfort Inns, and Fireside Junction Restaurant. Prior to the restaurant, I was the general manager of Rip Griffin's Truck Stop in Limon. Also, a high school math teacher and coach in Freeport, Illinois. My wife, Georgann, and I have resided in Limon since 1980. We have five children and five grandchildren.
Board Experience
I have been a proud member of the MVEA Board of Directors since 1988, currently serving as president of the board. I completed all courses required to achieve the Credentialed Cooperative Director and Board Leadership Certificates. I served 10 years on the Limon Town Board of Trustees. In 2013, I was elected to represent the Electric Cooperatives of Colorado on our national board, NRECA (National Rural Electric Cooperative Association). Then re-elected to serve on the NRECA Board in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. In February of 2021, I was elected to a leadership position as Secretary/Treasurer and in 2023 as Vice-President.
Service
A current member and past president of the Limon Rotary Club. Current member and past officer of the Citizens Investment Club. A past member of the Limon School District Board and a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Limon.
Position
"After serving many years on the MVEA Board, I have become aware of how complicated the rural electric systems are and have gained a comfort level in understanding these complexities. I want to help MVEA develop solar projects and other opportunities as they present themselves."
