MVEA Welcomes New District 3 Board Member, Wayne Vanderschuere
Mountain View Electric Association (MVEA) is proud to welcome Wayne Vanderschuere as the newest member of its Board of Directors, representing District 3. Wayne brings decades of leadership experience in utilities, an understanding of cooperative principles, and a personal commitment to serving the community he’s called home for 24 years.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a former Marine Corps Officer, Wayne’s career spans leadership positions at Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU), Duke Energy, and Consolidated Edison – managing large teams and multimillion-dollar budgets. At CSU, his roles ranged from customer service and electric operations to serving as General Manager of water services. He also has extensive governance experience serving on utility boards and engaging with policymakers at the state and federal levels.
Today, Wayne continues to serve as President of the Board of Directors for the Donala Water & Sanitation District, one of MVEA’s largest commercial members. His work there focuses on delivering safe, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services – a mission that closely aligns with MVEA’s values.
Wayne’s decision to run for the MVEA Board was fueled by a mix of professional expertise and personal connection. “I’ve been an MVEA member for 24 years, attended events, and have always admired the co-op’s member-forward culture,” he says. “It’s a good business model – one rooted in serving people first.”
As he steps into his new role, Wayne’s top priority is to fully understand MVEA’s strategic direction while ensuring the cooperative delivers reliable, always-on electricity at reasonable rates. “We don’t have to be the lowest cost, but we need to be smart with our resources – investing in safety, infrastructure, and future needs,” he explains.
Looking ahead, Wayne sees opportunities in addressing aging infrastructure, navigating the energy transition from carbon-based fuels to renewables, and expanding fiber broadband. “We can’t be risk-averse,” he says. “We need to make smart, financially sustainable moves that secure reliable electricity for our members. Plus, adding broadband to our infrastructure is a natural evolution that will benefit the communities we serve for decades.”
He also wants members to understand that MVEA operates under strong governance, guided by its mission, vision, values, and cooperative principles. “Hard work, integrity, commitment to the organization, and a drive to get the job done – those are values I live by,” he shares. “It feels good to serve on a board that holds itself to the same standard.”
In his first year on the Board, Wayne is most excited to meet MVEA’s employees and members, learning how the co-op works together to set long-term strategies and deliver on its mission. “All of us on the Board are members first and foremost,” Wayne says. “That’s what makes the cooperative model so unique – it’s about people, relationships, and building a strong future together.”
